The New NY Bridge

A partnership between Hirschfeld Industries and High Steel Structures, Inc. successfully landed the contract package for Structural Steel Fabrication for the approach spans on the New NY Bridge by Tappan Zee Constructors LLC, which will replace the Tappan Zee Bridge.

In mid-October, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the construction of the New NY Bridge to replace the Tappan Zee with installation of the first permanent piles that will comprise the foundation of the new bridge. The bridge is scheduled for completion in just under five years from the start of formal construction, making it one of the nation’s largest construction projects to be completed in this time frame.

Hirschfeld and High Steel are manufacturing the steel girders for the bridge superstructure spans with primary materials provided by ArcelorMittal USA. Deliveries of steel began in October 2014.

The New NY Bridge is part of the 570-mile New York Thruway system that will replace the existing bridge spanning the Hudson River, which carries over 138,000 vehicles a day between Westchester and Rockland counties northwest of New York City. The New NY Bridge is the largest design-build bridge system ever built in the US with a project cost of $3.9 billion and approximately 110,000 tons of structural steel.

Tappan Zee Constructors is a joint venture team of Fluor, American Bridge, Granite, Traylor Bros. and HDR Engineering contracted to design and build the eight-lane bridge. The first phase on the twin, three-mile structure, begins immediately with 19 approach span units that will carry eight general traffic lanes, emergency lanes, shoulders and dedicated lanes for bus, pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The first section of the new twin-span bridge is scheduled to open in 2016, and the new bridge should be complete in 2018.
