Las Bambas Copper Mine

Southern Peru

With an estimated capital investment of $5 Billion, Glencore Xstrata Copper plc. is developing the greenfield Las Bambas Project, in the southeastern Andean Apurimac region, with expected start up in the second half of 2015. The project is anticipated to yield 450,000 tons per year of copper and is being described a World Class, Tier 1 Copper Asset.

Bechtel is providing engineering, procurement, construction and construction management services for Las Bambas and other Xstrata mines, concentrators and related mineral processing facilities in South America.

Since structural steel is in the critical path, construction milestones, completion and ultimately project start-up depends on timely delivery of precision fabricated structural members. For Las Bambas the stakes were even higher, since the fabricated structure is in a high seismic zone, erected at high elevation, metric dimensions and in a remote region of Peru. The steel frame must fit together precisely.

Hirschfeld appreciates the confidence from Bechtel – Chile regarding the award for fabrication and delivery of 20,000 tons to the Port of Houston.
